Great Train Rides in the USA

Some of the most picturesque train rides in the United States pass through national parks or such famed regions as the Yukon Territory and the Great Smoky Mountains. Many train lines cannot operate year round because of weather concerns, but they provide a delightful experience in natural surroundings from spring t fall.
White Pass & Yukon Route
The White Pass & Yukon Route offers three scenic excursion train rides in Alaska between May and September. The White Pass Summit Excursion departs from Skagway and journeys 40 miles round trip up 2,800 feet to the White Pass summit. The Yukon Adventure offers a one-way 62-mile trip between Skagway and Carcross in the Canadian Yukon Territory. The Fraser Meadows Steam Excursion travels 52 miles round trip past the White Pass and into Fraser Meadow. Along the way, passengers can view some of Alaska's countless natural wonders, including glaciers, mountains, waterfalls, gorges and wildflowers.

Railway abandonment in Hong Kong
Posted on April 14, 2011 by Marcus
Despite the small number of railways located in Hong Kong, with the majority less than 40 years old, there are still a decent collection of abandoned lines, stations and tunnels. Lets start with the oldest…
Sha Tau Kok Railway
The Sha Tau Kok Railway was a 2 ft (610 mm) gauge narrow gauge line in the northern New Territories, running north from the main Kowloon Canton Railway at Fanling station, to Sha Tau Kok on the border with China. Opened in 1912, the line closed 1928 when a parallel road was opened. Today one of the steam locomotives is preserved in the Hong Kong Railway Museum, and on the ground some of the line can still be traced, with one of the stations still existing (photo via Wikipedia). You can read a bit more about the line in this PDF from the Hong Kong Railway Museum.
